Conny Janssen, selects choreographer Patricia van Deutekom for the 11th edition of this talent development project. In may 2023, she created ‘études des hommes’ with her own dancers during her Residency in HUIS Conny Janssen Danst. Now she gets the chance to create new work work with the dancers form Conny Janssen Danst.
About the choreographer
Patricia van Deutekom graduated in 2005 at ArtEZ in Arnhem. Over the years she established herself as a dancer and joined the company by Jens van Daele | Burning bridges, for which she was also working as a co-choreographer and rehearsal director. Patricia supervised the educational team, took care of the artistic content and gave dance workshops and masterclasses for the company. In April 2021, she founded her own company, named LAVA Collective, to move on with her inspiring vision and drive independently, along with creating professional (theatre)dance performances and developing her own unique style and artistic signature as a maker. For her role as dancer in her choreography ‘La Despedia’ (LAVA Collective, 2023) she has been nominated for a Swan for most impressive dance achievement
About her classes and workshops
Next to her work as an artistic leader, choreographer and dancer, Patricia van Deutekom is also working as a dance teacher. She teaches contemporary, floor work, condition training, repertoire and partnering to various national and international dance and art academies. Moreover, she was connected to the educational team of Introdans for years and is currently working as a freelance teacher for the talent development and education team of the Nederlands Dans Theater.
Patricia is not only a choreographer, but she also regularly teaches contemporary in HUIS Conny Janssen Danst. Patricia’s classis a physical contemporary dance training. The content of the class is focus on the use of the body in a very physical relation to the floor (and potentially to your partner). The most important factors are conveying and developing the principles and technique of floor work. It includes powerful and technical aspects and sequences like; in, out and with the floor, focussed on quality, dynamic differences, initiation, performance and stamina.
For years, Patricia was a dancer at Jens van Daele’s company. Now, as a choreographer at the helm of LAVA Collective, she is finding her own path with her compact, energetic dance language. Typical of her work is its unpolished and powerful nature. The collaboration with our dancers, bringing artistic information different from that of her own dancers, is a new adventure and – hopefully – an enrichment for us all!
