During the RIDCC 2023, Conny Janssen spotted the Canadian maker Charlie Skuy. Now he has been invited as a maker in DANSLOKAAL 12 and is creating new work with five dancers from Conny Janssen Danst: Mia Bourhis, Manon Delanoë (intern), Sara Mistrorigo, Enorah Schwaar, Margarida Silva (intern). We asked Charlie a few questions
What does it mean to you to be one of the choreographers of DANSLOKAAL?
Charlie: This is my first creation for a company. I am so happy to be invited here, and so grateful that Conny brought me into her home. It’s warm and loving.
What is it like to work with the dancers of Conny Janssen Danst?
Charlie: The dancers are kind, open, tender, smart, funny, patient, and willing to try everything. I make dance through free association, characters, and obsession. I hope the dancers can enjoy this way of making. Anyway, we like to laugh a lot. I’m lucky.
I make dance through free association, characters, and obsession. Charlie Skuy
Can you briefly describe what people can expect when they come to see your work in DANSLOKAAL?
Charlie: It’s ballet, it’s a witch dance. It’s smiling, but something’s off. It’s that Matisse painting of dancing bodies, the dance of being white, of fitting in and loving it, it’s ordering online and pilates. It’s inheritence and Hello Fresh and trips to Bali. Pure culture.
