Conny Janssen selects choreographer Charlie Skuy for the 12th edition of talent development project DANSLOKAAL. She spotted the talented choreographer during the Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition (RIDCC) in 2023.

Charlie Skuy is a Canadian choreographer and artist living in the Netherlands. He joined Nederlands Dans Theater in 2018 and created numerous works for the company’s choreographic platform, whilst dancing full time. Charlie is now performing and creating his work independently. His work has earned him awards, such as the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition. For his duet KEVIN he won the Conny Janssen Danst partner Award during the RIDCC 2023, performed with Emmitt Cawley.

Charlie also self-directed and produced numerous dance films and has recently been awarded in CINEDANS ’23 (film/choreography). He was asked by Canada’s National Ballet School in 2017 to create for Assemble Internationale and in 2023, was commissioned to make a full-length work with three older dancers at Origen Festival (Switzerland). Charlie’s passion for filmmaking, dance theater, visual art, and dreamlogic (David Lynch) opens several worlds and imagery in which he explores his relationship with fear, dissonance and aging.
We asked Charlie a few questions about the creation process. Read the full interview here.
Charlie Skuy is a young talented maker who I spotted in 2023 during the Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition (RIDCC). As a former dancer of the Nederlands Dans Theater, he has a rich dance vocabulary. His intuitive style is characterized by an explosion of movements. Fresh, humorous, extremely moving and full of unexpected twists. I am really looking forward to Charlie's collaboration with our dancers. Conny Janssen
