Maciej Kuźmiński

Bio
Maciej Kuźmiński (born 1985), currently living in Rotterdam, is a Polish choreographer, pedagogue, and producer, and a graduate of Laban Conservatoire in London. A child of transformation, Kuźmiński grew up witnessing Poland’s shift from communism to democracy and the transition from an analogue to a digital world. These experiences shape his artistic voice, which explores existential, and philosophical themes, including identity, memory, and spirituality. Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, his works have often focused on themes of war and trauma, as he collaborates with Ukrainian artists.

Kuźmiński’s movement language is grounded and dynamic, rooted in his original method, Dynamic Phrasing, which he has developed since 2009 and teaches internationally. His works, created for his own company and for theatres such as Hessisches Staatsballett, Landestheater Linz, or Polish Dance Theatre, have been presented in 27 countries. Since August 2023 Maciej Kuźmiński is based in Rotterdam.

Maciej about his Dynamic Phrasing class: “In Dynamic Phrasing we engage in dialogue with our own body by nourishing the diversity inherent to our nature and harnessing the power of gravity. This dialogue is strengthened through rigorous and multidimensional practice and a deep passion to experience movement. Dynamic Phrasing is a journey that leads us to the frontiers and limits of our bodies capacity for movement to reveal the roots and core of our being.”
Dynamic Phrasing was initiated nearly 15 years ago by Maciej Kuźmiński, and has been regularly taught in Codarts and ArtEZ among others. The classes at Conny Jansen Danst are the first open classes of the method in the Netherlands, during which two pillars of Dynamic Phrasing will be introduced – first a warm-up of DP I – the Loop, followed by DP III – phrases & repertoire.
