For DANSLOKAAL 14, our partner Korzo, selected choreographer Lea Ved. Lea creates work that captures the tensions and rhythms of life through a clear and expressive physical language. In this talent development project Lea works with Conny Janssen Danst dancers Adi Amit, Sara Mistrorigo, & Josiah Davey. We asked Lea some questions.
What is it like to work with the dancers of Conny Janssen Danst?
Lea: “It is really special for me to work with Adi, Josiah, and Sara. Meeting them in the studio for the first time felt like a weave of different corners, ages, experiences they meld and respond to one another really naturally and beautifully. I am equally delighted to discover them and the work we are building together. In the studio, there is rigor, collaboration, laughter. Each of them brings a palette of such precision and abandon – it’s a rich palette for me and for the physical language I love to work in. The generosity of their spirit, mind, and creative exchange is invaluable.”
What was the first image, idea or feeling you had for this piece?
Lea: “I’ve had the spirit of this work in mind, at heart, for years, I think. The word ‘rêverie’, I read it in a book in grade school, is just the kind of word I attach to and remember, one that evokes something vivid and visceral. Usually the word relates to daydreaming, something light and drifting, but for me it has also always carried something like a dense, distorted current. Something closely related to reality, and to where we meet it with imagination. I believe it is as inherent and human as a heartbeat.”
Can you tell briefly what the people can expect when they watch your piece in DANSLOKAAL?
Lea: “The audience can expect to be taken into a world of dream, detail, and delirium. Adi, Josiah, and Sarah captivate me every day, and I am inviting their instincts and spirit into the work. Something etched into the human body like fabric, made of their deviations and longings. Laura, our sound composer, is building a sound world that draws us inward; we are working at stripping the sound for this piece down to its bare essentials, allowing the music in the bodies to come alive. I imagine the work can transport us, not far away, but closer to our human mystery.”
