For DANSLOKAAL 13, Korzo selected choreographer Faizah Grootens. In her work, Faizah translates everyday situations and observations into physical compositions. What she observes—a gesture, a look, a rhythm—forms the basis of her choreographies. In this talent development project, Faizah collaborates with dancers from Conny Janssen Danst, Mattia Trematerra, Adi Amit, Pedro Ricardo Henry, and Noor Argov Dayan (intern). We asked Faizah a few questions.
What does it mean to you to be one of the choreographers in DANSLOKAAL?
It feels like this is happening at the perfect time. I’ve been very focused on developing my dance idiom these past few years, especially with a team I work with regularly and have been able to delve deeper. It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to further develop my core and dance idiom within this wonderful place and with wonderful people. And to perform on so many stages during the tour and also to connect more with the audience. I’m also curious about the work of Sheree Lenting and Andrea Constanzo Martini and am thrilled to share the program with them.
What is it like to work with the dancers of Conny Janssen Danst?
Working with the dancers has been super fun and inspiring. Their level of maturity and artistry is a gift. I feel a lot of engagement from the dancers within the work and the process and this again feeds the creation process. I really feel mutual trust from us and I think this is the best starting point we can have.
Can you tell briefly what the people can expect when they watch your piece in DANSLOKAAL?
“Aquí nada más” is a quartet of four people moving through the psychological and social pressure people experience while waiting. What are they waiting for? An open question, a probing. All they have to do now is to be here.
