ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHER
Antonin Comestaz
Antonin is a French choreographer based in the Hague. He graduated from the Paris Opera Ballet School and went on to dance with the Paris Opera Ballet, the Hamburg Ballet, Tanz Theater München, Ballet Mainz, and Scapino Ballet Rotterdam.
Since 2013, Antonin has regularly created works under the wings of the Korzo production house in The Hague and for various companies and distinguished dance academies.
The characteristic of his choreographic language is its playful tone and a personal, inventive, and detailed dance vocabulary with elements borrowed from folk, mime, breakdance, commercial dance, ballet, contemporary dance, and cartoons. Within a piece, drastic shifts of styles and genres may occur, knitted together by a refined sensibility for the absurd. Antonin’s works have been invited to numerous international choreographic competitions and festivals.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
“Boddy Riddles” by Antonin Comestaz
With “Body Riddles,” Antonin invites the participants into his universe, where movements and gestures are treated like words that, in sequence, outline characters, tell a story, or form riddles. The first phase is dedicated to getting familiar with his movement approach and philosophy via an impro-based playground that explores the dialogue between the body and imagination. In the second phase, those concepts are then further applied to some choreographic material characterized by swift shifts of dynamics and qualities. In the third phase, Antonin proposes to deconstruct, transform, and recontextualize the existing material with the creative input of the participants.
