Conny Janssen selects choreographer Andrea Costanzo Martini for the 13th edition of talent development project DANSLOKAAL. She spotted the talented choreographer during the Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition (RIDCC) in 2024.

Andrea Costanzo Martini is an Italian choreographer and performer, born and raised in Piedmont. He began his dance training at Danzicheria in Cuneo and at the Teatro Nuovo in Turin, later continuing his classical studies at the Heinz-Bosl Stiftung Ballet Academy in Munich. At 19, he moved to Germany, starting his professional career in 2004 at the Aalto Staats Theater in Essen. In 2006, he joined the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv, performing works by Ohad Naharin and Sharon Eyal. During this time, he also taught Gaga and developed his first choreographies within the Dancers Create project.

Andrea’s choreographic language merges extreme physicality with theatrical narrative, using irony and humor to subvert expectations of contemporary dance. His work explores the power dynamics between performer and audience, the desire to capture attention, and the risk of objectification. His pieces blur the boundaries between dance and performance art, frequently integrating objects, text, video, and audience interaction. Since 2007, he has been a certified Gaga teacher and leads workshops worldwide.

Between 2008 and 2010, he danced with the Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm, interpreting works by Benoît Lachambre, Alexander Ekman, and many others. While at Cullberg, he created his first group piece, For Men Only. In 2012, he returned to Israel, joining Inbal Pinto & Avshalom Pollak Dance Company. Since then, he has focused on his own choreographic practice. His most renowned pieces are a.o. What Happened in Torino (2013, First Prize at the Stuttgart Solo Dance Competition) and SCARABEO (Aerowaves 2018).

With his catchy work, Andrea has his own style in which humour and communication play significant roles. Not only communication between the dancers; his work is also a dialogue with the audience. I am eager to discover how Andrea, in cooperation with the Conny Janssen Danst dancers, creates a new narrative. Conny Janssen
