For DANSLOKAAL 14, our partner Dansateliers selected choreographer Amparo González Sola. Amparo’s work ranges from dance performances to participatory projects and is shaped by feminist activism, her experience of migration and an ongoing search for reciprocity. Her work is characterised by relational gestures, attentive listening and slowing down. In this talent development project she is working together with Conny Janssen Danst dancers Noor Argov Dayan, Lucrezia Minelli & Lola Piret. We asked Amparo a few questions.
What is it like to work with the dancers of Conny Janssen Danst?
Amparo: “The process has just begun, but I am already enjoying it a lot. I am working with Noor, Lucrezia and Lola. In the studio I have found great trust and a willingness to experiment, even though this may be a different way of working for them. I’m sharing movement material with them that comes from my ongoing research, and I’m also working with material that comes from their own body archive. I’m happy with what is emerging from that encounter.”
What was the first image, idea or feeling you had for this piece?
Amparo: “I started from the idea that our body stores memory, that our muscles carry the memory of actions and gestures that have been performed repeatedly, in our own lives, but also across the generations that preceded us. I wanted to explore some of these memories with the dancers. In parallel, there’s something that has always fascinated me: if you place metronomes with different beats on the same surface, they will eventually begin to synchronize because of the vibrations transmitted through it. There is something in that phenomenon of tuning into each other’s tempo that I wanted to explore in this piece: the relationship between the personal and the collective beat.”
Can you tell briefly what the people can expect when they watch your piece in DANSLOKAAL?
Amparo: “I would like to invite the audience to let themselves be carried away without trying to understand everything. To connect with the associations and emotions that arise from observing the specific movements and gestures we are working with, and perhaps even to connect with their own muscle memory.”
