Conny Janssen selects choreographer Andrea Costanzo Martini for the 13th edition of talent development project DANSLOKAAL. She spotted the talented choreographer during the Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition (RIDCC) in 2024. Andrea’s choreographic language merges extreme physicality with theatrical narrative, using irony and humor to subvert expectations of contemporary dance.
What does it mean to you to be one of the choreographers in DANSLOKAAL?
It is an honor and a privilege to be one of the choreographers taking part in DANSLOKAAL. Having the support of such an established and inspiring structure allows me to explore ideas I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise—such as working with a larger cast. I would like to personally thank Conny for so generously opening the doors of her ‘HUIS’ to me.
What is it like to work with the dancers of Conny Janssen Danst?
At the start of rehearsals, I met the dancers for the first time. It has been an absolute pleasure to see them dive headfirst into my movement language, with such remarkable curiosity and openness. I can only hope to be as generous to them as they have been to me.
Can you tell briefly what the people can expect when they watch your piece in DANSLOKAAL?
I am creating a work that puts imagination at the forefront, while questioning the very act of performing for an audience and the aesthetic choices we make as both creators and interpreters.
