For DANSLOKAAL 13, our partner Dansateliers selected choreographer Sheree Lenting. Sheree creates art that is both thought-provoking and socially relevant, providing a powerful mirror of our times. Her mission? To uplift, empower and inspire people to change. In this talent development project, Sheree works together with Conny Janssen Danst dancers Yashasvi Shrotriya & Gaspar Ribeiro. Wij asked Sheree a few questions.
What does it mean to you to be one of the choreographers of DANSLOKAAL?
Sheree: “For me, being part of DANSLOKAAL is a chance to grow while staying true to who I am. It feels like an opportunity to honour my roots while shaping something new with others. I carry the voices and experiences of my community with me, and bringing those stories into this setting is both humbling and exciting. It’s not only about choreography but also about creating connections between people and personal experiences, reflecting on histories and imagining what is yet to come—offering something truthful and transformative through dance.”
What is it like to work with the dancers of Conny Janssen Danst?
Sheree: “Working with the dancers of Conny Janssen Danst is such an inspiring journey. They bring incredible skill and artistry, but also laughter and lightness, even when we explore heavy themes. What excites me most is their openness, their trust to step into vulnerability and their willingness to explore beyond movement. Together, we create a space where risk, play and honesty can coexist. It is in that in-between space—between strength and softness, discipline and freedom—that the work truly comes alive.”
Can you briefly describe what people can expect when they come to see your work in DANSLOKAAL?
Sheree: “People can expect an experience that is both intimate and layered. I want the audience to feel drawn into the atmosphere we create together through movement, sound, and presence. At times, it might feel raw; at other times, tender, but always human. I hope people leave with something that resonates personally, whether it is recognition, reflection or simply something that stays with them after the performance. In the end, I hope the audience experiences a sense of empowerment and permission to feel, pause and move through the world differently.”
