Interview: Lazy Susan & Co and Gerben Vaillant

Posted: Fri 29 Mar 2024

Since March 25 dance company Lazy Susan & Co has been working together with mime artist Gerben Vaillant in the studio of HUIS Conny Janssen Danst. As artists in residence, they are working on a new project ‘This is just a simple dance’, a physical and visual performance that will premiere on May 11, 2024 in Dansateliers, Rotterdam. We asked them some questions about their residence.

How did you end up doing your residency in HUIS Conny Janssen Danst?
‘Conny Janssen Danst is one of the biggest and most recognized institutions of contemporary dance in Rotterdam. As a young Rotterdam-based contemporary dance collective, Conny Janssen Danst is an institution we look up to for the organizational challenges it overcame, its artistic output and, perhaps most importantly: the support of young makers.
Also, the team of the company is friendly and welcoming which creates a safe and open environment. For these reasons, reaching out for our residency, was a logical step for our creative process.’

The residency is the starting point for an artistic exploration of the collaboration between Gerben Vaillant and Lazy Susan & Co: a bold step towards the unknown and an exchange between all performers.

What are your plans during this residency?
‘The residency is the starting point for an artistic exploration of the collaboration between Gerben Vaillant and Lazy Susan & Co: a bold step towards the unknown and an exchange between all performers. Risky and cheeky, we wish to challenge dance and create fiction with and for movement. Additionally, Lazy Susan & Co searches to deepen their connection as members and define their artistic signature by working all together for the first time on stage as performers.’

How is it for you to do this in the studio of HUIS Conny Janssen Danst?
‘The location is calming and beautiful. The facilities are great, and the team is helpful. For dancers it is important to work in a space with the right size, floors, and temperature; this can be hard to find in Rotterdam.’

What do you hope to share during the presentation on April 6?
‘Material that is a seed for a bigger performance. Something radical and brutally simple. Something holy and something trash. Dance in a fictional context: we create an imaginary village where stories circulate and where nothing is everything.’

Lazy Susan & Co and Gerben Vaillant are guests at HUIS Conny Janssen Danst until Saturday April 6. On this last day they conclude their residency with a workshop – accessible to all ages and levels – followed by a presentation in which they share their results.
