Conny Janssen Danst (English)
About Conny Janssen and her company
Conny Janssen (Rotterdam, 1958) completed her training at the Rotterdam Dance Academy in 1982. During her career as a dancer, she already developed to become an extraordinary choreographer. In 1992 she founded her own dance company in Rotterdam, and from that day on, Conny Janssen Danst has presented pure dance, coloured with a human touch.
Conny Janssen’s choreographies are characterized as inventive, powerful and moving. Her dance idiom does not stand by itself, but is combined with a refined choice of music, design and lighting.
The many faces of her work turn every production into an unpredictable voyage of discovery for both her dancers and her audience. She melts together her flexible, outstanding language of dance with the personal qualities of her dancers. Therefore, her dancers are on the stage as human beings of flesh and blood: fragile, passionate and with fighting spirits.
Beside productions that offer consolation in an increasingly inhuman world, Conny Janssen draws her inspiration from life in the big city: a fast-moving, vital world, full of diversity; a world which leaves more room for the dancers ‘narrative. The metropolitan productions of Conny Janssen are rough, waywardly constructed choreographies, full of alertness.
Conny Janssen is a specialist in creating on-site performances: from theatre to factory hall, from church to parking garage. By entering into alliances with artists and institutions from the world of photography, film industry, architecture, theatre and music, Conny Janssen puts her dance in a broader perspective. Furthermore, Conny Janssen Danst is a breeding ground for young talent, with both young dancers and young creators of dance given the opportunity to develop within the company’s professional environment. By doing so, the company is an important ambassador for modern dance.
In June 2007, the Province of South Holland awarded Conny Janssen the title ‘Gezichtsbepalend Kunstenaar’ [representative artist]. She had previously been awarded the Philip Morris Art Prize for Dance for VIJZEL [Mortar, 1998), and the Choreography Incentive Prize from the Dansersfonds (Dancers Fund, 1994) for her constant artistic development, the individuality of the choreographic material, and the balance between pure dance and theatricality in her work. In 2012, Conny Janssen was made a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau. In 2015, she became a member of the Society of Arts (a section within the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences), where she also is a member of the board. In March 2016, the Rotterdam Promotion Prize was presented to Conny Janssen by the Mayor of Rotterdam Ahmed Aboutaleb.

With about 100 performances in theatres, at festivals and special locations, the Rotterdam based dance company Conny Janssen Danst has been reaching a large audience in the country for 30 years. The company also provides plenty of room for new choreography and dance talent through talent development programmes. With the development of Huis Conny Janssen Danst in the Katendrecht area, a new promising phase begins: the development of a Rotterdam house for dance. A vibrant workplace with brand new studios where not only their own performances are developed and rehearsed, but which offers also plenty of room for new encounters between disciplines, people and organizations.
