Maker in DANSLOKAAL 7: Joseph Simon
What does it mean to you to be one of the choreographers in DANSLOKAAL?
Joseph: As a Rotterdam based artist, It’s great to have this opportunity of exchange with the company. I’m happy I can apply and share some of the research I’ve been doing over the past years under the umbrella term “ballet fantasies” with an established dance company. It’s especially exciting that the work will be performed a lot, so it can keep growing and gain new visibility. For Danslokaal, I will be focussing on a specific language I call “sticky feet”.
What is it like to work with the dancers of Conny Janssen Danst?
Joseph: It’s fun. The dancers I’m working with (Remy, Adi, Chanel) have been very open to enter the universe of “sticky feet”. It requires them to find a nonchalant and casual way of dancing while dealing with complicated counts and precise leg movement. This leads to good mix of confused brains and laughter. The dancers are curious and attentive to small details, which I feel grateful for. Also, the diversity of Conny’s dancers makes it very interesting for me to work with each dancer individually and explore how they interpret and enrich my ongoing research on ballet.
Can you tell briefly what the people can expect when they watch your piece in DANSLOKAAL?
Joseph: Well… some ballet with a twist, leading to absurd seduction.
